7 products to healthier hair

Updated: Oct 11, 2023

Hey, my name is Taylor and I love changing up my hair. From the time I was allowed to get my first highlights done until now, I have really put my hair through it. I've had it long, cut it short, had sew-in extensions, and gone blonde. I've dyed it bright red which led to at least a year of battling orange hair, purple, blue, green, black; you name it. I have even done the absolute no-no of bleaching it myself with no training whatsoever. If you're here, that means you are probably like me, have put your hair through it, and are looking for a few tips to bring it back to life. I got you.

This was my hair a little over a hair ago. My hair was literally breaking off in the back in chunks. That's what happens when you bleach your hair at home with no professional knowledge of what you are doing. I was still paying for my choices MONTHS later. I was getting married so I cut it short and shortly after this was taken I had to get sew-in extensions to fix my hair for the big day.

Now I use Aussie shampoo which isn't necessarily the best for your hair. It's the only thing I've ever found to keep a condition I have in check. This means I need to be careful with the other products I use in my hair because it dries my hair out so much.

Here are the 7 products I recommend to help you get back to healthier hair:

1. I use the HI•PRO•PAC extremely damaged hair repair, intense protein treatment for my conditioner. I love this stuff. I bought this on Amazon and it's amazing. I've been using it for about 8 months and a little goes a long way with this product. I only need a quarter-sized amount when I shower and I use it right after I shampoo and rinse. I leave the product in for about 3 minutes while I move on to another part of my shower routine to let it soak in. Remember to really comb it through your hair before rinsing.

Truthfully I need to get back into using it. I used it for a while and really liked it. Best of all, it's cheap and we all love affordable products. I was using it once a week because I have greasy hair but if your hair is very dry you can use it more than that.

3. If you're trying to get your hair back to a healthier state, another thing to remember is to try not to overwash your hair. I know this can be quite annoying sometimes, especially if you have easily greasy hair like me but overwashing your hair strips a lot of your hair's natural oils. So I had to become besties with the magic of dry shampoo. I've tried a few different ones and I finally found one I really like. I use the Amika perk up plus dry shampoo. I've also used the regular Amika perk up and it's just as good. I make sure to spray a generous amount in my hair and thoroughly brush it through so there are no streaks.

4. If you're someone who uses product in your hair regularly you'll know that sometimes it just builds up even when you think you've washed it out. One product I have discovered that I feel works really well in moments this this is the OUAI Detox shampoo. I love to have this in my shower when I feel I need just that extra bit to help clean my hair. It's not something I have to use super often but I love having it available.

5. If you're someone who regularly styles with heat tools, you need to make sure you're protecting your hair. I don't style very often, but when I do I use the Amika blockade heat defense serum. A little goes a long way with this stuff and it's great to help protect your hair against hot styling tools. We don't want fried hair!

6. If you have harsh water then you know how bad that is for your hair. We have harsh water in our apartment so we invested in this AquaHomeGroup 15 stage shower filter. We've had it for about 7 months and I think it's definitely made a difference (and didn't take too long to install either.) It also comes in a 2o stage version. This has become a new staple for me.

7. The final product is the Nexxus clean and pure invigorating detox scalp scrub. Scalp exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and promotes hair regrowth. This is something that doesn't need to be done often (about once a week to once every two weeks). A quick and simple thing to add to your hair care routine.

Finally, I want to give you a few extra tips just to give you that extra boost towards healthier hair.

•The brush you use is important and the way you brush is important. I use this Wet brush go green tea tree oil-infused hair brush from Target. Make sure you're brushing your hair from bottom to top so you're not ripping through the knots in your hair and don't over-brush!

• Silk pillowcases! They are so much better for your hair than cotton ones. You can find them anywhere. I got mine from Amazon.

•No harsh hair ties! I put my hair up often and realized the hair ties I was using were breaking off my hair. Now I use soft hair scrunchies instead. You'll always see one around my wrist.

•Lastly, hydrate! I know personally that I'm not always the best at drinking water. But it's important! And it's definitely important for your hair. Dehydration immediately stops hair growth and our hair needs moisture! Drink up!
